Horny Fungus
Oct 10   Yamagata
Oct 10   Matsushima, Miyagi

Armillaria mellea

Very good taste as the reputation. Thick in miso soup. The bunch on photo grows on a timber, but it mostly grows on stumps. The top of young caps have flakey splits. Grows in early autumn.

White Brittlegill
Aug 3   Rifu, Miyagi
Oct 10   Yamagata

Russula delica

Baaad! Stiff, crumbly and rusted.

Russula delica

Faint bluish hue on the foot near the cap is a distinguishing character from a toxic relative.

Strobilurus
Oct 30, Nov 25, Dec 12   Taiwa, Miyagi
Oct 31   Kurihara, Miyagi
Nov 3   Ishinomaki, Miyagi
Nov 25   Aoba, Sendai, Miyagi
Dec 3   Ikeda, Fukui
Dec 21   Rifu, Miyagi

Strobilurus_ohshimae

Not bad taste. Too wet for tempura. A little crunchy in miso soup. Grown among cedar litter. Cap is white like a ghost or with a grayish hue. Foot, upper white to gradually reddish brown and hairy below. Common under cedar forest in late autumn to early winter.

Destroying Angel
Sept 6   Hasama, Tome, Miyagi
Oct 10   Yamagata
Oct 10   Matsushima, Miyagi

Amanita_virosa

Amanita_virosa

Described as fatal. Big and conspicuous white. It is said some panther mushrooms are very delicious, and I tried a bit, but I could not detect any particular strong taste.

Weeping Bolete
Sept 5, Sept 14   Shiogama, Miyagi

Suillus_granulatus

A bit tasteful. Abundant on the premises of our institute. There is few toxic species in the bolate family, and they are safe. I expected to be good for soup from its sticky cap, but nothing thick in miso soup. Fairly for tempura.

Slippery Jack
Oct 18   Sanda, Hyogo

Suillus_luteus

Fairly. Just looks like the former Weeping Bolate, but has a weak annulus. Comes out under short pine trees by a footpath. Fairly for tempura.

Fried Chicken Mushroom
Sept 23   Matsushima, Miyagi

Lyophyllum_decastes

Good! Crunchy texture. Boiling in a soup, it makes very thick. Some old one I collected in Hachimantai, Iwate was not very good because of senescence.

Angel Wings
Sep 23   Matsushima, Miyagi
Oct 4   Zao, Miyagi
Oct 21   Aoba, Sendai

Pleurocybella_porrigens

Tasteful. Easily identified. The only white wing mushroom on cedar timbers. It turned out recently that it is deadly toxic for some people mostly with kidney disorders.

Pleurocybella_porrigens

Growing on cedar timbers cut down and placed in Aoba Forest Greenery.

Luminescent Mushroom
Oct 28   Narugo, Miyagi

Lampteromyces_japonicus

A representative toxic mushroom. Big and looks tasty, though. Inside the cap root has a dark blotch. Tear the cap to see this blotch. Every year TV news reports poisoning of this mushroom misidentifying as shiitake, but I think it does not look like shiitake as it is said.

Crown-Tipped Coral Fungus
Sept 23   Matsushima, Miyagi

Artomyces_pyxidatus

Taste unknown. A distinctive form. Grown on a pine timber, whereas most coral mushrooms grow on a ground.

Jelly Ear Fungus

Feb 2   Rifu, Miyagi
Mar 17   Hayama, Kanagawa
Apr 29, May 9, May 24, May 27, Nov 21   Kanazawa, Yokohama
Jun 23, Jun 30   Osato, Miyagi
Sept 23   Matsushima, Miyagi
Dec 21   Rifu, Miyagi
Dec 30   Miura, Kanagawa

Auricularia_sp

Gooood. Velvet-like surface. Timbers stacked at roadside hold this mushroom. These man-made environments are frequently good mushroom hunting spots rather than deep forests. Growing one after another, I visited a week later and collected much again. A tight fungus and keeps its shape for a few days in a refrigerator. Inflated like a ping-pong ball when cooked for tempura. Crunchy in miso soup, different from dried fungus in the market.

Auricularia_sp

A big bunch on a log by a footpath in a city park. Many people take a walk here. Nobody notices.

Auricularia_sp

Another type of jelly ear fungus found in Yokohama. Soft and gelatinous. Good for Chinese soup with egg.

Auricularia_sp

Both gelatinous and velvet types of jelly ear fungus grow on a stump.

Dec 17, Dec 21   Rifu, Miyagi
Dec 26   Kimitsu, Chiba
Dec 30   Miura, Kanagawa

Flammulina_velutipes

Deliiciooous as an excellent reputation. Quite different from pallid bunch in markets. Light brown cap little bigger than coins with dark short foot. It is written that foot has velvet-like dense short hairs, but these hairs are so tiny that almost invisible. Sticky cap looks tasty and indeed thick in soup. Foot looks dried and rough but good crunchy taste when boiled. This photo shows mushrooms grown on fallen timber, but usually grow on stumps.

harvest

Velvet foot harvest. A big bunch.

Flammulina_velutipes

Sometimes foot is light at young.

Oyster Mushroom
Jan 11   Kamakura, Kanagawa

Sep 29   Kamakura, Kanagawa
Oct 10   Matsushima, Miyagi
Dec 30   Miura, Kanagawa

Pleurotus_pulmonarius

Maybe good but... A big bunch. Looked like rum's head mushroom from distance, but turned out to be this species when approaching. Old stab and not very much tasty.

Pleurotus_pulmonarius

A young and good bunch on a willow or alder stump in a marsh.

Pleurotus_pulmonarius

A timber filled with young bunches.

Magic Blue Gym
Jun 30   Osato, Miyagi

Gymnopilus_aeruginosus

Bitter. Looks like very good edible, though. Young cap has a membranous veil. Top of the cap is rough and has small processes. Grown on cut down young cedars. A reddish one at upper right is one found on a day before in Shiogama, also grows on cedar timber, similar to this species, but magenta gray inside the cap and not bitter.

Shield Pinkgill
May 21, May 23   Rifu, Miyagi

Entoloma_clypeatum

Goood but... Emerged after rainfall under a plum tree in my garden. When opens well, the cap flattened or bent upward with sharply convex at the center. Usually a couple of mushrooms come out together with their feet connected. Heavy. Foot thick below like a pot, smooth at first, rough when getting old. Good crunchy texture as tempura, but wet body makes the oil burst and splash. Also good for miso soup. But, smells like sweat, when stewed with soy. Bad.

big yield

Big yield of shield pinkgill.

Panther Mushroom
Spt 23   Matsushima, Miyagi
Oct 22   Shiogama

Amanita_pantherina

Tasty and toxic. Grown near the Matsushimakaigan Station.

Amanita_pantherina
Young guis look like just a mushroom in a fairy tale. Grown under pine trees near the institute. Looking at closely, the panther-like pattern on the cap can be recognized that it is made of broken membranous cover of the cap as it grown bigger. Well-known as a typical toxic mushroom, but it has a good strong taste. I tried a bit and understood it is really tasty. A small mushroom on the near side is unknown.

Terrestrial Pholiota
Oct 20   Taiwa, Miyagi

Pholiota_terrestris

Weakly toxic. Grown here and there on the ground under cedar trees. I colleted them as I thought it was an edible pholiota, but it turned out toxic consulting with a pictorial book on mushrooms. The book says well opened cap has gill with brownish stain and this color is characteristic to the toxic species. It is just as seen in the photo. Disappointed.

Puffball
Oct 20   Taiwa, Miyagi

Lycoperdon perlatum

? I have not yet tasted. Very whitish.

Crumble Cap
Jun 21   Rifu, Miyagi

Psathyrella candolleana

Lacrymaria velutina

Taste not good. Grown on mossed ground by an old log. Edible but nothing to say about its taste. Not bad, though.

Cup Fungus
May 9   Kanazawa, Yokohama

Galiella celebica

Good? Thick and gelatinous inside. Grown on an old log after heavy rain. Bizarre looking but edible. Peel and just taste like nata de coco in Chinese soup with egg.

Osteina Fungus
May 24   Kanazawa, Yokohama

Osteina obducta

Looks tasty, but stiff.

Yellow Brain Fungus
May 30   Kanazawa, Yokohama

Tremella mesenterica

Soft and delicious. Looks like a yellowish jelly ear fungus. Very soft and lose its shape when washing to cook.

Semmel Porling?
May 30   Kanazawa, Yokohama

Albatrellus confluens?
Albatrellus confluens?

Big! Reported to grow on a ground, but it grows on an old timber.

Milk Cap
Oct 18   Sanda, Hyogo

Lactarius violascens

Bitter. Hot. Looks like very much the popular Hatsudake, but has a fragile foot and milk under the cap. A little bitter and hot just like mushed raddish (Daikon). I think it's tasty.

Yellowilk Cap
Nov 3   Kamakura, Kanagawa

Lactarius chrysorrheus

Bitter. Not tasty. Looks like the former species, but it has shorter foot and the milk is yellow.

Puffball
Oct 2   Kanazawa, Yokohama

Calvatia craniiformis

Baaaadd!! Looks like a marshmallow, but rotten taste.

Brown Witch's Butter
Oct 30   Miyagino, Sendai

Shiitake
Jan 11   Kamakura, Kanagawa
Feb 6   Yokosuka, Kanagawa
Dec 17   Kashimadai, Miyagi

Good, but not delighted very much because it is so common in market. This one is half dried under several fine days straight.

Pheasant's Back Mushroom
Apr 16   Zushi, Kanagawa

Pheasant's Back Mushroom

Good? It was young and soft enough to eat.

Straw Mushroom?
Nov 3   Kamakura, Kanagawa

Straw Mushroom

Taste unknown, because I didn't eat it. I thought its looks like some toxic Amanita.

Earthstar
Nov 26   Kamakura, Kanagawa
